Oboe – Solo/Duo

Sonatina for oboe and piano  (2012) – 9’00”.The sonatina is in three movements, each relying on simple sectional forms. The first movement (Allegro), a five-part rondo – ABACA, is somber, dark and tense. The second movement is in a ternary form – ABA – and is firmly in F major. It is slow (Langsam), contemplative, and full of subtle metric changes. The third movement – Allegretto – begins in F major and is light and cheerful. The form is an extended rondo – ABACADABA – with the opening material featuring 26-beat phrases divided into sub-groups of seven, seven, five and seven beats. This creates a staggering, dance-like effect.  MIDI recording.

Sonata for oboe and harpsichord (2011) or for oboe and piano (2012) – Duration: 11’50”.  The sonata is in three movements.  “Contrasts” pits a lyrical oboe against rapid motion from the keyboard.  “Interlude” is a chromatic slow movement that is dramatic and forceful.  “Dialogue” creates an interplay of three ideas performed by the oboe and either hand of the keyboard player.  Its fast pace and rhythmic energy create a fitting finale.  MIDI recordings.
