Bassoon – Solo/Duo

Confessions of a Former Bassoonist (6/23/23) for solo bassoon – 9’30”.  During my senior year in high school, I played bassoon on a school-owned instrument.  Due to circumstances beyond my control, the experience ended there.  However, the sweet, woody, sometimes nasal sound of the bassoon has haunted me ever since.    This is my tribute to that wonderful instrument in three movements – Love, Longing, Liberty. MIDI recording.

Aubade/Bagatelle (3/30/20) for bassoon and piano – 3’30”. I conceived this piece as a kind of “morning song”, greeting both the brightness and cheerfulness of a sunny new day filled with gentle breezes. It is in ternary form with opening and closing sections that display the light-heartedness of a bagatelle. The middle is more languid and like an aubade in that it feels like a melancholy love song.  MIDI recording.

Sonata for Bassoon and Piano (1/31/17)  – 12’30”.  The sonata is in three movements.  The opening movement is fast.  It expresses a wholesome, self-confident nature.  The slow movement is somber.  It is highlighted by a bassoon cadenza in its middle.  The finale takes the drama of the second movement and puts a positive spin on it.  Passion builds in the slower middle section.  MIDI recording.
